By the end of the year there are no premises for disconnection of electricity, as the purchase contract with MGRES is in force. State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy Constantin Borosan says. In the event that Gazprom, as of January 1, does not deliver sufficient volumes of gas to the Transnistrian region, necessary for power generation, Chisinau will have to buy energy from Romania, IPN reports.
One of the scenarios discussed by the government is that Gazprom will reduce the volumes of gas delivered to the Transnistrian region from 5.7 million cubic meters per day to 2.5 million cubic meters. In this situation, the Cuciurgan plant will not be able to produce energy for the right bank of the Dniester.
"If we do not take electricity from MGRES, we will import it from Romania, as was the case in November 2022. Besides, we will use all the energy produced on site. The CETs can increase their production capacity", the state secretary of the Ministry of Energy explained during a program on RliveTV.
MGRES has coal stocks for 50 days. Buying gas at market price for power generation at the Cuciurgan power plant is too expensive for Moldova. "It would be more advantageous to buy electricity from Romania. But everything depends on the gas purchase price", Constantin Borosan added.
Electricity purchase capacity through the interconnection with Romania is limited to 315 MW, which is insufficient to cover peak demand. The authorities urge the public to consume energy responsibly.
"We have low consumption on Saturdays and Sundays because the economic sector does not consume on these days. On these days we start the washing machines. In my family this is how we do it", Constantin Borosan said.
The energy vulnerability of the Republic of Moldova is also accentuated by the fact that the Isaccea-Vulcanesti interconnection line crosses the territory of Ukraine, which makes it susceptible to disruption in the event of new attacks on the energy infrastructure in the neighboring country.
