By invalidating the early mayoral elections in Chisinau, the government set for itself a ticking bomb that will definitely explode. The rulers should realize that the country is not theirs, but is the people’s. The issue was developed in the talk show “Expertise hour” on Jurnal TV channel, IPN reports.
Political commentator Victor Ciobanu said the invalidation of elections is the last and thickest red line passed by the current government. “I think that by such a move the government set a ticking bomb for itself and we will see what happens. It is definite that this government will fall as it is already clear that it will not be tolerated,” stated the analyst.
Journalist Igor Volnitski noted the Republic of Moldova belongs to the people, not to the government and when pronouncedly antidemocratic decisions are taken, the government should realize that the people are affected. “We now have a very predictable situation and we will see if those from the government at least try to leave this arrogance aside as this really does not have a place in the equation and make a minimal effort for things to return to normality,” he stated, referring also to the halt in the EU macro-financial assistance. According to him, normality will be if the government finds a method to invalidate the election of Andrei Nastase as mayor.
Executive director of the Institute for Strategic Initiatives Vlad Kulminski said he does not think that the government does not understand the consequences of the invalidation of the local elections. “If the government, knowing the consequences, decided to take such a step, this looks like despair to me. The government considered allowing Nastase to take up mayoralty would imply larger costs than the passing of this red line that matches no rule and for which it knows it will be criticized,” stated Vlad Kulminski.
WatchDog.md expert Valeriu Pasa said the EU finacing for Moldova was suspended over a year ago, when the mixed-member electoral system was introduced and this was a diplomatic signal. This time the European officials transmitted a message that indirectly said that they do not believe in the independence of the judiciary in Moldova.
