Businessman and ex-MP Gheorghe Straisteanu gets 11 years in prison
The former MP of Party of Democratic Forces and owner of Catalan TV, Gheorghe Straisteanu was sentenced to 11 years in prison. The judgement was pronounced by the Buiucani District Court on Wednesday, July 4.
The General Prosecutor’s Office announces that Straisteanu, 53, was condemned for theft, while his accomplice, 33, got 12 years in jail on the same charges, as well as for unauthorised possession of munitions.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the two convicts stole in the period from February to June 2005, goods valued at MDL 155,370, by breaking private cars. They were caught red-handed on July 20, 2005.
Gheorghe Straisteanu was a member of parliament in 1998-2001. He was the Secretary of the Parliamentary Committee for State Security and Public Order and member of the Committee for Special Investigations.
