Bulgarian ethnics from Moldova will not work in summer in Bulgaria because of Governments’ reluctance

The intentions of tourism operators from Bulgaria to employ Bulgarian ethnics from Moldova to work in summer at Black Sea resorts are smashed by reluctance on behalf of Governments from Chisinau and Sofia. As the president of the Moldo-Bulgarian Business Club, Pyotr Popov, hinted in an interview for Info-Prim Neo, the Bulgarian tourism companies launched the idea during the Chisinau visit of Bulgarian Premier Sergei Stanishev, in mid-February, this year. Functionaries from both Governments were to get ready the relevant package of documents, as the Bulgarian news agency Novinite had reported it would be signed by the end of February. The business club president explains: “At this moment, Moldova and I oppose to be looked at as labor exporters.” Pyotr Popov suggested the wages proposed by the Bulgarian companies were below expectation, too. The largest resort on the Bulgarian coast of the Black Sea, Sunny Beach, planned to hire 5,000 Bulgarian ethnics from Moldova. The Bulgarian Association of Tourism Agencies said in February it was going to sign the contracts with the new employees by the end of that month, in Chisinau. As Romania, Bulgaria grants citizenship to people from neighboring countries. Earlier in April, Bulgaria’s deputy Minister of Justice Boyko Rashkov stated the Ministry was processing over 250 applications for Bulgarian citizenship every week. Only in 2008 the Ministry got 61,000 such applications, most from people from Moldova, Ukraine, Macedonia and Russia who declare they have Bulgarian origin or want to settle with their families in Bulgaria. Especially after joining the EU in 2007, the Sofia authorities got worried at the country’s depopulation. According to the global statistics portal www.nationmaster.com, as for the index of perceiving happiness, the Bulgarians declares themselves as the most unhappy people (62%), followed by the Moldovans (56%) and the Belarusians (54%). This is for the second time when the Chisinau Government avoids to creates opportunities for citizens to gain money abroad. The Government is also reluctant to sign an accord with Romania, that will enable Moldovans residing near the EU border to enter the neighboring country without visas.
