Building Bridges of Knowledge: Europe Days at National Library

In the historic context in which the Republic of Moldova moves decisively towards integration into the European Union, libraries become central points in promoting and encouraging European values, as well as in providing correct information about the country’s European course, declared Jānis Mažeiks, EU Ambassador to Moldova, during the inauguration of Europe Days at the National Library, taking place during May 8-31.

Jānis Mažeiks noted that Europe Day is not only an occasion to celebrate European identity, it is also a platform for peace, dialogue, learning and collaboration. The ambassador expressed his delight that the National Library is organizing a series of events dedicated to this important celebration. The diplomat highlighted the role of librarians in developing critical thinking and encouraging people to get information only from reliable sources. “With every book read and truth discovered, we change the world for the better”, said the head of the EU Delegation to Moldova.

Rodica Crudu, Secretary of State for European Integration, stated that for Moldova, European integration is, first and foremost, a peace and security project. “In today’s regional context, peace and security is the most important necessity, a premise to ensure a prosperous future, a better life for our citizens”, said the secretary of state. One of the Government’s missions is to promote European culture in Moldova and libraries have an important role in creating resource centers for European integration.

Andrei Chistol, State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, praised the event as one that highlights the role of the National Library: to inform the general public and ensure access to the documents that are the basis of the European integration process. “Public libraries are those venues that can organize discussions with members of local communities on understanding the messages and real concerns related to European integration”.

Elena Pintilei, general director of the host institution, mentioned that Moldovan public libraries in 2024 must get involved in European projects, promote information and content about the European Union, about EU values, promote the European social model. “The library community in Moldova chose to contribute to the creation of the future we want, for which we deserve to live here, at home, in a European Moldova”, added the director of the National Library.
