Brochure for preventing violence against persons with special needs

The Association “Motivație” of Moldova launched a brochure on the prevention of violence and discrimination against persons with special needs. According to the study “Domestic violence against women in the Republic of Moldova”, 63% of the women were subject to psychological, physical or sexual violence by their partners in their lifetime. One woman in ten faced economic abuse. Victoria Boțan, PR specialist of “Motivație” Association, said three are no statistics in Moldova concerning the number of persons with special needs who are annually subject to violence, but these persons are more often abused and discriminated as they have limited possibilities of defending themselves, IPN reports.

Even if some of the petitions or applications can be submitted online, this opportunity is not accessible to persons with visual impairments. If a petition is submitted by a person with hearing impairments, this should be assisted by a sign language interpreter, who should be hired and paid by the state. Most of the times, this does not happen. The employers often have stereotypes about persons with special needs, stated Victoria Boțan.

The brochure says the persons who know cases of violence can call the trust line for women and girls 0 8008 8008 or, in extreme cases, they can seek help on 112. Those who want to learn more about the legislation in the field and the available sources can visit http://antiviolenta.gov.md/ and http://stopviolenta.md/.

The brochure titled “Violence does not have excuses!” was produced in the framework of the program “Together against Gender Stereotypes and Gender-Based Violence” that is financed by the EU and is implemented jointly by UN Women and UNFPA.
