Mayors of a number of localities and representatives of the Congress of Local Authorities of Moldova said the communities they manage suffer because of the neglected buildings whose owners went away and stopped looking after them. The executive director Congress of Local Authorities of Moldova Viorel Furdui said the application of a stricter policy towards the owners of such buildings could help solve the problem of neglected houses. “Another solution is to declare the buildings whose owners are not known as property of the local administration. There are such buildings that spoil the aspect of the locality. These have several owners and are thus falling into ruin. Discussions should be held with all the owners so that these donate the building to the local authorities if they do not take care of this,” Viorel Furdui told IPN. He also said that not only private buildings are left to go to ruin, but also buildings that were initially planned as schools or hospitals. “Such buildings should be transferred to the local administration that could put them to good use,” stated Viorel Furdui.
The National Liberal Party (PNL) and the People’s Movement Party were the biggest winners in Moldova, taking roughly 13,600 and 11,000 votes respectively, with the Alliance 2020 USR-PLUS coming in third with over 3,500 votes. Of the three independents on the ballot, George Simion was preferred, being the choice of over 2,000 Moldovans. Over 3,000 Romanians in Moldova voted for the governing Social Democratic Party (PSD), Pro Romania Party got over 1,500 votes, and the independent candidate Peter Costea over 360 votes. Other contestants, including the PSD ally ALDE, got under 300 votes in Moldova.
Approximately 38,000 Romanians in the Republic of Moldova cast their ballots in the European Parliament elections on May 26. The voters aged between 45 and 64 were the most active ones, while those aged between 18 and 24 were the least active ones. More than 19,000 voters were males. The voters in Moldova were among the most active ones, alongside those in Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK.
MPs of the Bloc ACUM filed a petition to the Prosecutor General’s Office, saying the Government’s canteen, the villa classed as a historical monument and the Press House (about 2,000 square meters in area) were privatized in non-transparent conditions. According to the MPs, an illegal scheme involving high-ranking functionaries was employed to lease out a number of publicly owned buildings situated in central Chisinau several months before their privatization so as to artificially decrease the selling prices and to privatize them in the absence of a contest to choose the lessee.
In an article for IPN, publicist from Comrat Veaceslav Craciun says a new party intends to safeguard the interests of the Gagauzians and Bulgarians in Moldova at the level of national politics. Analyzing the chances of a party like “Bugeac” at an emergent stage to enter Parliament, the author resorts to calculations: “The election threshold is 6%. Given the total number of voters and the voter turnout at several previous parliamentary elections, 1% is equal to 15,000 voters. According to the national register of voters, there are about 165,000 voters in Gagauzia and in Taraclia district. At the parliamentary elections of 2014 and 2019, approximately 82,000 and 78,000 people, respectively, voted there. This mean that to get the necessary 6%, “Bugeac” should first of all stimulate the regional activism of the voters and bring at least 90,000 people to polling stations and secondly, should persuade them to ignore the other parties and vote unanimously for it. This is a work of fantasy.”
After President Igor Dodon last week said the post of Parliament Speaker is a guarantee given that the President of Moldova was suspended for five times during the past two years and a half, constitutional expert Nicolae Osmochescu, former Constitutional Court judge, said the Constitution stipulates that if the office of President of Moldova falls vacant or the President is dismissed, or if he is temporarily unable to fulfil his duties, the post is held on an interim basis by the Speaker of Parliament or the Prime Minister, in turn. Asked what happens if the Speaker supports the President’s position not to promulgate a law or not to sign a decree, the expert said these duties are automatically transferred to the Premier. If the Speaker avoids fulfilling his duties while holding office of President on an interim basis, he can be dismissed under a procedure initiated by a group of MPs.
Chisinau acting mayor Ruslan Codreanu has announced the municipality started the procedure of calling for tenders to provide a long-overdue e-ticketing solution for the city’s public transport system. Municipal transport chief Lilian Copaci, however, says the announcement is not quite accurate. Copaci said that what happened on May 27 was a meeting of the procurement commission, which discussed organizational issues, and that the call for bids would not be announced before all those issues are solved. The municipality first pitched the e-ticketing idea in 2010, promising to implement it no later than in 2012. The deadline has since been delayed over and over.
The municipality of Chisinau launched the works to repair the underground pedestrian walkway situated on Constantin Negruzzi St in Centru district of Chisinau. The works to the value of about 1 million lei are executed by the road maintenance company “Exdrupo”. The local authorities promised that eight underground pedestrian walkways will be repaired in the course of this year.
