Bridge over Prut inaugurated, barbed wire removed
The Radauti-Lipcani bridge over the Prut, connecting Moldova and Romania, was inaugurated Monday in a ribbon cutting ceremony officiated by Moldova's Prime Minister Vlad Filat and Romania's Administration Minister Vasile Blaga, Info-Prim Neo has learned from the Moldovan governmental press service.
After the ceremony the two officials chatted with people from both banks. “I am very proud to be the first citizen of the Republic of Moldova to have crossed the Prut in this place, after all these years”, said Filat as he walked along the bridge towards Radauti, Romania.
Vasile Blaga declared it was a great honor for him to officiate at the inauguration of the tenth checkpoint along the Moldo-Romanian frontier. “I hope I'll see you again here on March 31, when the Small-Scale Border Traffic Agreement takes effect to allow the Moldovan citizens living within 50 kilometers from the border to enter Romania without impediments, without a visa, just with a permit”, he said.
After the inauguration, Filat invited Blaga to take part in a formal act of taking down the barbed-wire fence separating Moldova from Romania. The event took place in the immediate vicinity of the bridge. Also attending was Dirk Schuebel of Germany, the head of the EU delegation to Moldova, who said he understood the significance of the event, recalling moments from the history of his own country.
