The Briceni Police Inspectorate closed its remand prison after employees of the Ombudsman’s Office ascertained degrading and inhuman conditions in the jail, IPN reports.
According to the Ombudsman’s Office, the detention conditions weren’t improved after the last monitoring visit. The ombudsman’s team determined there was no heating in the prison and the held persons and the supervisor had to endure cold. The Ombudsman’s Office issued a notice, urging to immediately identify solutions to repair the heating pipe or to close the prison during the cold period of the year by transferring the detained persons to another prison if this is not possible.
The closing of the remand prison in Briceni was preceded by the reopening of the Edineț Police Inspectorate that was renovated with European funds and to which the persons held at the prison in Briceni will be transferred.
