As of today bread in retail stores is on average by 15% more expensive, with some brands increasing in price by as much as 70-80 bani. Other bakery products have also increased in price, IPN reports.
In Chisinau stores, the bread previously selling for 3.2 lei now sells for 15 bani more expensive. French loaves known as Franzela increased in price by 50 bani on average, and rye breads by 80 bani, now costing nearly 7 lei.
Two days ago, the Association of Bakers blamed the rise on higher flour prices as well as increased electricity and gas tariffs. Contributing to the rise is also the depreciation of the leu, with the ensuing rise in prices on raw materials on the domestic and regional markets.
