The president of the Social-Democratic Party (PSD) Dumitru Bragis told a news conference that he will tender his resignation at the next ordinary Congress of the party. “The PSD is the only party in Moldova whose statutes say that if the party loses the elections its president should resign,” Braghis said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. The PSD leader made the statement after he spoke about possible ways of overcoming the constitutional crisis. “Regretfully, the parliamentary parties, first of all the PCRM, ignored the people's wish that the head of state should be elected, expressed in different opinion polls,” Braghis said. The president of the PSD welcomed the decision to create the constitutional reform commission and called on its members to make everything possible to give the right to elect the President directly back to the people. In this connection, the Social-Democratic leader said that the present system does nothing but keep the society in a permanently unstable political situation. Speaking about the recent signing of the memorandum on the merger between the Social-Democratic Party and the Democratic Party, Dumitru Braghis said he regrets the haste in which such a decision was taken. “Even if the Political Bureau backed this idea by 7 votes to 13, it did not have the right to initiate the merging procedure before the National Council and the PSD Congress pronounced on this,” he said. The National Congress of the PSD will take place on December 19. It will discuss the merger decision and assess the general prospects of the party. “I can say that all the parties try to recruit our people, but none of the PSD member accepted to leave the party, as far as I know. I am in favor of preserving the current format of the party, at least until the next local elections,” the PSD leader said.
