Boris Gîlcă released from detention

Boris Gîlcă, the head of Chisinau’s Directorate of Health Care and Social Assistance, has been released from custody under the obligation not to leave town, the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office announced.

Meanwhile, prosecutors unsuccessfully sought the arrest of the Directorate’s chief legal officer, but the Chisinau/Ciocana Court decided the functionary should be placed under house arrest for 30 days instead.

Last week, Gîlcă and an aide were for arrested 72 hours following a series of searches. According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, it is believed they were involved in stealing humanitarian aid intended for Ukrainian refugees. Nine other municipal employees are under investigation as well.

Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban denounced the arrests and searches as “persecution and harassment” of his colleagues. Ceban also said Gîlcă tendered his resignation, adding he wouldn’t accept it.
