The Chisinau City Hall was evacuated and cordoned off after a Russian-speaking man called at 1:20pm Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca's antechamber to announce that one of the rooms in the building had been planted with a bomb.
The mayor called immediately the relevant services.
“The staff of the City Hall has been evacuated and the offices are being inspected, including the basement”, Chisinau Police spokesman Adrian Jovmir has told Info-Prim Neo.
Police and emergency crews, including firefighters, were deployed to the scene.
One hour later, the City Hall staff were sent home as Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca went on a business trip.
Asked by reporters whether the bomb alert was in connection with Mihai Ghimpu's controversial decree on the Soviet Occupation Day, as speculated, Deputy Mayor Mihai Furtuna avoided a straight answer. “Only the lady in the Mayor's antechamber (who answered the call) can answer this question”.
Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca is the vice president of the Liberal Party, which is led by acting president Mihai Ghimpu, and also Mihai Ghimpu's nephew.
[Update 2:59pm:] Adrian Jovmir said that the inspection was continuing and that the City Hall staff wouldn't be allowed into their offices until 1:00pm tomorrow. “The procedure is for the inspection to last 24 hours”.
[Update 3:08pm] “If acting president Mihai Ghimpu doesn't annul his June 28 decree, his nephew will suffer”, the anonymous caller was quoted by Mayor's assistant Alina Sandu as saying.
[Update 15:20pm] A few policemen are still guarding the area around the City Hall, but most of the police, as well as the firefighters and bomb disposal experts have already left the scene. Passenger traffic around the building was also unblocked.
