All those who want can have their blood sugar level determined free of charge today in more than 200 centers in Moldova, such as drugstores, state institutions and mayor’s offices. The patients who are diagnosed with diabetes for the first time and the refugees with diabetes are issued with free glucometers and 100 test strips and lancets. The announcement was made in an event held to celebrate World Diabetes Day on November 14, IPN reports. 

Doctor of Medicine Boris Golovin, who heads the Association of Diabetics of the Republic of Moldova, said that over 120,000 persons in Moldova have diabetes at present and the testing of blood sugar levels among the population is important for preventing this disease. Besides public health facilities, blood sugar level checking services could be provided by three colleges in Chisinau, like the music, informatics and medicine colleges. “Our goal is to reach as many people as possible so that we identify more people who suffer from this disease,” said the doctor.

Tamara Adașan, president of the Homecare Association, said the blood sugar level can be tested in each locality where there are social centers. On Moldova’s territory, there are now 49 units where blood glucose levels are checked, including at the Palanca frontier post. Employees and refugees can also be tested there.

According to doctors of the National Clinical Hospital “Timofei Moșneaga”, the persons who want to do a glucose blood test must not have breakfast and must not drink tea/coffee. The normal blood sugar levels are 3.3-6.1 mmol/l (millimoles per liter) or 60-110 mg/dl (milligrams per deciliter).

As from July 1, 2022, the persons with diabetes have received free test strips and lancing devices for monitoring blood sugar levels and can also benefit from seven types of insulin analogs. Treatment is prescribed by the endocrinologist and the medicines are issued in drugstores free of charge.
