Black fasting day today. Bonfires and carols on old-style Christmas eve

The old-fashioned Christmas Eve traditions vary from one region to another, but they all have common roots specific to the inhabitants of the Republic of Moldova. It is accepted among the people that on the eve of the Nativity of the Lord, the people should be reconciled with each other, should clean up their houses and prepare for the news of the birth of Jesus Christ. Here are the most widespread traditions.

The priest visits each house and blesses households

On Christmas Eve, the local priest visits each household and announces the birth of the Lord to the people. The priest goes to people's homes with the icon of the Nativity of the Lord. Depending on the locality, this custom is conducted on Christmas Eve or two days before Christmas.

Through carols, children announce the birth of the Lord

The children form groups of carolers to bring the news of the birth of the holy child into people's homes. Often, caroling can start as early as on Christmas Eve, with specific songs, such as "Good morning to Santa Claus".

Black fasting day

On the eve, believers keep strict fasting. They do not drink or eat anything throughout the day. The faithful also go to church to attend the Vespers service on Christmas night.

Preparations for the holiday meal

Housewives prepare a rich holiday meal. Tradition says that there should be 12 dishes on the table, which symbolize the 12 months of the year. In the place of honor are cabbage rolls, meat jelly and dishes prepared from pork, because Moldovans on the eve slaughter the pig. In some regions of the country, a meal of remembrance of the dead is held on the eve, with fasting foods.

Bonfires on Christmas Eve

In some localities, large bonfires of logs are made in the middle of the garden or on the outskirts of the village. This fire symbolizes purity and protection from evil spirits. The fire is guarded by young people, who sing carols around it.

Regardless of the day the Moldovans celebrate Christmas, either in the new style (December 25) or in the old style (January 7), these traditions and customs create a festive atmosphere in every home.
