The natality rate in Moldova is three times lower compared with the rate in the Soviet period, said academician Eva Gudumac, who heads the Pediatric Surgery Section of the Mother and Child Center. According to her, the main causes for such a state of affairs are the persons’ tendency to individuality and egoism and the loss of confidence in medicine.
“We think more about us than the future of society. Most of the couples have by a child as they want to live for themselves,” the doctor stated for IPN.
Eva Gudumac also said that the loss of confidence in medicine and the exodus to other countries also led to a lower birth rate. “Many children are born ill and need surgery immediately after they are born. Even the operations not always can save lives. The parents do not understand this and loose confidence in doctors,” she stated.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, 39,000 children were born in Moldova in 2012. In the Soviet period, there were born about 90,000 children a year.
