The basic pension will be a fixed sum that will be added to the old-age pension calculated in accordance with the current legislation. All the pensioners will be entitled to this, except for those who retire in privileged conditions, such as the prosecutors, judges and MPs. The commission on social protection, health and family approved the bill that institutes the basic pension put forward by the Communist MPs, IPN reports.

The bill authors said the method of determining and setting the pension will be improved by combining the current contributive mechanism for calculating the benisons, based on the insured income, with a new element based on such a criterion as universality, which is typical for the state financial support. The given changes will increase the social protection level of the elderly people and the level of equity and social inclusion.

The commission suggested that the basic pension should be 200 lei, though the bill authors proposed that this be hire. An estimated 510,000 people will benefit from this pension. For the about 400,000 pensioners who now receive financial support to the pensions, the basic pension will substitute the current support of 100 and 180 lei, depending on the category. For about 130,000 pensioners, the bonus to pension will be 200 lei.

By an amendment, the commission proposed changes that will enable all the 36,000 pensioners who stopped to be eligible for state financial support after the April 1 indexation to benefit from this support in continuation.

The bill will be submitted to Parliament for examination during the next few days.
