The presence of Moldovan diaspora members expected to come in large numbers to the August 26 rally will be a signal for the government that not everything it does can be swallowed. The rally organizers count on the participation of Moldovans living abroad, many of whom are vacationing at home during this period. Such opinions were voiced during a talk show on 10TV last night.
Vladimir Bolea, president of PAS Chisinau, says he hopes that, besides the usual audience, the August 26 rally will also see many diaspora members who are at home now in big numbers. “The large numbers of diaspora members will be a big warning signal for the government that not everything can go as it wants. The complete lawlessness existing today in Moldovan politics shows that there are no limits for those in government. To them, the EU doesn’t matter, the United States’ opinion doesn’t matter, the people’s opinion, anything. It’s a state that guarantees nothing to us the citizens, we don’t have rights as they are constantly and brazenly violated. They’ve turned it into a machine to steal and launder money”, fumed Bolea.
Tatiana Poting, vice president of the Liberal Reformatory Party, says she hopes the rally will unfold without any violence. At the same time, she thinks that Moldova expats shouldn’t be singled out when urging people to join the rally, as this divides society. “I don’t know if we are able to overthrow the government on August 26, but what we need to do is to show the government that the number of discontented people is very big and that this sentiment will grow bigger and bigger as election day comes nearer. They must know that they can’t lie anymore, they can’t promise reform and don’t deliver, they can’t engage in this bravado that Plahotniuc is displaying on TV. At the very least, we must show them we are fed up”, says Tatiana Poting, adding that for this to happen, there should be a very big crowd and a lot of solidarity at the rally.
