“Big cleanup” continues, block dwellers urged to clean yards

The autumn cleanup campaign titled “Big cleanup” continues this Saturday, October 3. Last Saturday, there were cleaned the parks and woods of Chisinau, but now the people are urged to clean the yards of the blocks where they live.

Contacted by phone by IPN for a comment, Vasile Efros, who heads the Territorial Development and Cleanup Section of the Public Amenities Division, called on all the dwellers of apartment buildings to lend a hand so as to live in a cleaner environment. All the participants in the cleanup campaign will be provided with sacks and gloves.

Last Saturday, 900 to 1,000 persons, mainly employees of municipal services, divisions and district head’s offices and also volunteers, became involved and collected over 5,000 sacks of waste. The Public Amenities Division organized the transportation of 105 cubic meters of waste by 22 trucks.

“Usually, in parks and forests, the people organize picnics as a result of which they leave piles of waste. We last Saturday collected the waste left by those who normally should gather it when leaving the picnic area and should leave the place clean. This is the mentality of the people in Chisinau,” stated Vasile Efros.

The largest volume of litter was gathered in Buiucani district, primarily PET bottles, glass, paper and plastic.

The “big cleanup” started on September 26 and will last for a month.
