The Perinatal Center and the Emergency Reception Unit of the Causeni District Hospital were equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, donated by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) as part of the humanitarian response provided by UNFPA to the Government in ensuring sexual and reproductive health for refugees from Ukraine and for the local population, IPN reports.
“Maternal health is at the heart of our mandate and we advocate a world where every pregnancy is wanted and every birth is safe. UNFPA reconfirms its commitment to support the strategy and efforts of the Ministry of Health to strengthen the perinatal service in the Republic of Moldova. We do this by outfitting hospitals with modern medical equipment, training medical staff and reviewing protocols, so that the childbirth experience is a positive one,” said UNFPA Moldova Deputy Representative Natalia Plugaru.
In total, UNFPA, with the financial support of the Embassy of Sweden, invested approximately 7 million lei in the Causeni District Hospital. From this money, the delivery rooms, the operating room, the women’s recovery room, the neonatal resuscitation room and the Blood Transfusion Department of the Perinatal Center of the hospital were rehabilitated, outfitted with modern medical equipment and furniture. Also, the Perinatal Center received a type A ambulance, which will ensure the rapid transfer of women who risk developing complications and giving birth prematurely to higher-level perinatal centers.
In addition to the rehabilitation and equipping of a series of wards with medical equipment, a Unit for survivors of gender-based violence, including sexual violence, was also set up at the Causeni District Hospital, with the support of UNFPA in coordination with the Ministry of Health, with the aim of responding to the immediate needs of victims of violence. Within the unit, there is a gynecological examination room with the necessary high-performance medical equipment and kits for post-rape assistance, a psychological support room, rooms for medical staff, a meeting room and sanitary facilities adapted to the needs of people with disabilities.
As part of its emergency response to the flow of refugees from Ukraine, UNFPA, in cooperation with other partners, is supporting the efforts of the Ministry of Health to increase the resilience of the National Perinatal Health Service of the Republic of Moldova. Key interventions in the last two years include equipping 12 perinatal centers with modern medical equipment, providing essential equipment and supplies for blood banks in healthcare facilities that offer emergency obstetric care, delivering 29 ambulances, improving coordination pathways between national and subnational perinatal centers, as well as training health professionals in the management of obstetric emergencies.
