BEM president discharged
The president of Banca de Economii (BEM) Grigore Gacikevich was dismissed from post by the bank's Board. Prime Minister Vlad Filat said a final decision will to be taken at the general assembly of shareholders, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The Government holds over 56% of the stock in this bank. The Premier said that Gacikevich was suspended from the post as he had irrationally used the financial resources, including by violating the legislation, so that the competent bodies will thoroughly examine his work.
The press reported that among the reasons for the dismissal was the donation of 30 million lei for repairing the Parliament and the Presidential Office and certain aspects concerning the taking over of the bankrupt BC Investprivatbank, where Gacikevich worked earlier.
Grigore Gacikevich has been the director of Banca de Economii since May 2004. The bank's assets total 4.95 billion lei, while the loans – 2.2 billion lei. The deposits increased by 10.7% during a year, to 3.07 billion lei. The share capital is 861 million lei. BEM has 100 ATMs and 400 point-of-sale terminals. The net profit for 2008 amounted to 37.14 million lei, constituting 85% of the total profit made by Moldova's banks.
