The Belgian authorities informed the Moldovan counterparts about the decision to extradite Iurie Topală through Interpol channels. The former director of Moldova’s Railways was put on the wanted list on November 23, 2021, IPN reports.
Iurie Topală was arrested on the Gosselies – Charleroi Airport in Belgium on January 11. In Moldova, he was accused of fraud, appropriation, active corruption and abuse of power or abuse of office.
The General Police Inspectorate said that Iurie Topală is to be extradited to Moldova in several days.
A warrant for the arrest of Iurie Topală was issued in Moldova in January over abuse of power committed in the interests of an organized criminal group. According to prosecutors, it goes to the defective management of Moldova’s Railways in 2015-2019 as a result of which damage of 250 million lei was caused to the state-run enterprise.
