Belarus might join GUAM

The meeting between Victor Iuscenko and Alexandr Lukasenko could be a turning point in the distribution of powers within CIS, the Russian newspaper “Nezavisimaia Gazeta” reports. According to the newspaper, if the dialogue between the 2 presidents will be successful, Belarus might join GUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova). The idea of a “turning point in Minsk’s foreign policy” emerged after the two presidents had a telephone talk and planned a meeting in Kiev in mid-February, “Nezavisimia Gazeta” adds. The relations between Russia and Belarus worsened in light of the fact that the Russian concern “Gazprom” announced the increase in price of gas supplies to the Republic of Belarus.
