BCC initiates discussions to develop broadcasting sector

The Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) opened discussions with broadcasters in order to remove the shortcomings from the Broadcasting Code, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The aim of the meeting is to establish a dialogue between the BCC, the broadcasters and the distributors of services in order to develop the broadcasting sector and I think we will reach a consensus so as to have a common way of developing the broadcasting market,” the Council’s chairman Marian Pocaznoi said in the roundtable meeting “Observance of the Broadcasting Code provisions. Prospects of developing the broadcasting sector”. According to Marian Pocaznoi, the involved players should be first of all interested and ready to obey the law, while the discussions should produce solutions so as to resolve the problems existing in the field of the media. Chiril Lucinschi, head of the parliamentary commission on culture, education, research, youth, sport and mass media , said a constructive dialogue is needed between the BCC, the broadcasters, civil society and the parliamentary commission. “I believe it’s time to abandon this Stalinist-like treatment when the state institution is regarded as a penalizing body. The state should contribute to the development of the broadcasting sector. But it is hard to achieve a positive result without team spirit and cooperation between the sides,” said the MP. Chiril Lucinschi also said that he is waiting for proposals aimed at improving the legislation. He added it is important that the broadcasters discuss these proposals with the BCC. Attending the event, Dumitru Lazar, the representative of the Council of Europe, said the Council of Europe in 2010-2011 intensely cooperated with the BCC in monitoring the broadcasters and offered assistance in preparing the monitoring reports in the two election campaigns of 2010 and 2011. “We will also provide support in monitoring other important aspects us such as the respect for the morality and the children’s rights in the mass media in Moldova,” he stated. The discussions were held at the initiative of the BCC with the support of the Council of Europe, within the Joint Programme between the Council of Europe and the European Union “Democracy Support in Moldova”
