Most of the buildings that were formerly movie theaters were transformed into discos, stores, billiard halls, bars and other facilities. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Natalia Matveevici, director of the company “Moldcinema”, said the national movie theaters are in a deplorable condition. Many of them were sold on condition that the investors build cinema halls, but most of them ignored this condition. “Moldcinema” currently manages eight movie theaters, as against over 50 in the 1990s. A part of these theaters are waiting for the new owners, while the others are leased out. Natalia Matveevici said the movie theater in Vulcanesti town is in the best condition, but no pictures are shown there because there is no money for purchasing them. “The last time there was screened an animated cartoon on June 1, but entrance was free of charge then for the children from the district,” said Natalia Matveevici. The movie theater in Telenesti is in a critical state. “An administrator was appointed, who surrounded the building with a red ribbon so that the people are careful as pieces of cement may fall from the building at any moment,” said the director of “Moldcinema”. In Falesti, a part of the movie theater is leased out. The economic entity set up a shop of school supplies. “We expect that the Public Property Agency will take a decision to privatize them,” said Natalia Matveevici. Elena Balanuta, head of the Public Property Agency’s Post-Privatization Division, has told Info-Prim Neo that six movie theaters in Donduseni, Rascani, Sangerei, Calarasi, Causeni and Floresti have been put up for sale. The investors must satisfy a number of conditions, including renovating the cinema hall, in accordance with the signed contract,” she stated. Elena Balanuta said all the investors that acquired the movie theaters by contest renovate the buildings. This condition is not fulfilled where the buildings were bought directly from mayors’ offices. The movie theaters started to be privatized after 1990.
