Barrier at post in Vadul lui Voda set up by order of peacekeepers’ commander

The barrier at the peacekeeping post in Vadul lui Voda town was placed by Transnistrian military men by order of the post’s commander. In a communiqué, the Joint Control Commission (JCC) says that in a meeting after the incident, the commander confirmed that he gave such an order, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the JCC, the order runs counter to the decisions taken in the January 13 extraordinary meeting and was given without preliminarily informing the Join Military Command of the Peacekeeping Forces about it and without the consent of the Commission. “The situation was remedied shortly afterward, with the participation of residents of the neighboring villages,” says the JCC. Under the regulations existing in the Security Zone, any action should be taken in compliance with the procedures and with the consent of all the components of the peacekeeping mission. At the insistence of the Moldovan delegation to the JCC and in order to improve the situation at the peacekeeping post in Vadul lui Voda, in the April 12 meeting it was decided to send military observers to the post. The subject is to be analyzed in the next meeting of the Commission. Reiterating the necessity of maintaining stability in the region, the Moldovan delegation to the Joint Control Commission stressed that any initiative must be discussed only within the exiting mechanisms and procedures, adding such incidents are an additional proof that methods for making the current peacekeeping operation more efficient should be identified in concert.
