Barrages transferred under state ownership
90 kilometers of barrages built along the rivers Nistru, Prut and Byk have been transferred from the territorial-administrative units under state ownership, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The latest floods showed many of the barrages to not meet the technical standards,” Minister of the Environment Gheorghe Salaru said in the Government's meeting on July 16.
In the future, the anti-flood barriers will be managed by Moldova's Water Agency, which will select the seriously damaged segments of barrage for repair. As all the barges will be under state ownership, there will be worked out a common strategy for restoring the old barrages and building new ones. Money from the national public budget and certain funds, including crossborder projects, will be allotted for the purpose.
Gheorghe Salaru said10 million lei has been allocated from the Ecological Fund this year for reinforcing the barrages. Most of this money has been already used.
“This is a very low sum as the barrages were built in the 1970s and many of them have never been repaired. We hope that if we have a strategy and present viable projects, we will be able to access European funds and take part in regional projects so as to build up the barrages and erect new ones as soon as possible. The works will cost millions of lei,” the minister said.
The anti-flood barrages in Moldova are about 1,000 kilometers long.
