Barbed wire fence taken out in Grigore Vieru's native village
The barbed wire fence placed at Moldova's border with Romania will be removed today from the native village of poet Grigore Vieru. According to the Border Guard Service, the remaining portions of the fence will be taken out the next days.
Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the late poet's wife Raisa Vieru said she is sure that Grigore Vieru is now happy in heaven that one of his dreams came true. “At first, Grigore dreamed of crossing the river Prut and he crossed it. Then he dreamed that the barbed wire fence at the border with Romania will be removed and this is now happening. He had one more dream that is hard to fulfill – to unify the Romanian people,” Raisa Vieru said.
The head of the Border Guard Service Alexei Roibu said the works to remove the barbed wire fence will be completed in several days.
There will be collected 2,500-2,800 tonnes of barbed wire. It is not known yet where it will be taken. “Many people ask that we give them barbed wire so that they fence their yards and protect their animals and fowl from boars and other wild animals. Others suggest smelting it and using the metal for building bridges over the Prut. We collect all the information from the local public authorities and will then ask the Government to take a final decision,” Roibu said.
Alexei Roibu also said that the wooden posts will be most probably burned because when they were fixed they were treated with a special solution and cannot be now used for other purposes. “The mayors in Ungheni propose distributing the wood to veterans, pensioners and other underprivileged groups, but it is again the Government that will take a decision in this respect,” he added.
The barbed wire fence started to be removed on February 10, on the initiative of the Moldovan Government. The deadline for finishing the works is March 31.
