Barack Obama calls on EU to keep door open, while on Moldova to knock at the door

The United States of America supports the open door policy towards the countries that want to join the European Union, U.S. President Barack Obama said in a meeting with Head of Parliament and Acting President of Moldova Marian Lupu. Barack Obama said he will continue to support Moldova’s European aspirations and highly approved of the efforts made to promote democracy and reforms in the country. The meeting took place on May 28 on the sidelines of the 17th Summit of Central Europe Heads of State, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the presidential press office. In the meeting, Marian Lupu reasserted that Moldova’s main objectives at the current stage are related to the European integration process. He thanked the United States for the multilateral support provided to Moldova and stressed the necessity of stepping up the internal efforts so as to achieve results in the implementation of the necessary reforms. In the same connection, Moldova’s Acting President raised the subject of the country’s reunification and underlined the necessity of resuming the talks in the 5+2 format in which the OCSE, Russia and Ukraine act as mediators, while the U.S. and EU as observers. Marian Lupu restated the Moldovan authorities’ position that the Transnistrian conflict should be solved by identifying a viable solution to reunify the country within the international recognized borders.
