Bank fraud is the biggest disappointment for EU

The bank fraud is definitely the biggest disappointment for the EU as regards Moldova, said Prime Minister Pavel Filip, who reiterated the Government’s intention to take measures to prevent similar frauds in the future, IPN reports.

“This was surely the biggest disappointment. When a partner like the EU helps you with a lot of money and this money is stolen, this is definitely a disappointment,” Pavel Filip stated in a talk show on Prime TV channel.

He noted that several sets of actions are important in this respect – investigation, holding accountable of those to blame, recovery of the stolen money and amendment of the legislation so as to prevent such frauds. “It is as important to get back at least a part of this money, if not all of it. But it is even more important for the governmental team to create the conditions needed for such frauds not to repeat in the Republic of Moldova,” said the Premier.

Pavel Filip also said that the authorities are waiting for the Kroll report, which will bring greater clarity as to this fraud. On the other hand, the law enforcement agencies must make effort to identify those involved. Holding those to blame accountable is the safest method of making sure that such things will not repeat. But laws to strengthen the regulatory institutions, especially those from the banking sector, should also be adopted. “Everyone should be identified so that we no longer have such a story in the Republic of Moldova. I put great hope in the Kroll report which will show who was involved in this process and where at least a part of the money is,” he stated.
