Any political caprice or intention based on political motives is a short-term one. The ban imposed by Russia on the import of fruit and vegetables from Moldova is also a short-term one, of a year. Sooner or later it will be lifted, in the same way it was imposed, executive director of “Expert-Grup” Association Adrian Lupusor said in a news conference held to present the journal “Euromonitor – editia T2, 2014”, IPN reports.
The expert said that Russia does not have legal basis for imposing these restrictions. In order to explain them, Russia must prove a rapid growth in re-exports from Moldova. “We must take into account the fact that imports from the EU within the Association Agreement will take place within particular quotas. This fact runs counter to Russia’s fears concerning the massive re-export of goods to Russia following imports from the EU,” stated Adrian Lupusor.
Executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy ADEPT Igor Botan said the ban refers mainly to perishable goods and, when the problem of perishability of these products is solved, the ban will be lifted. “We all understand that this is political pressure,” he stated.
Russia imposed a ban on the import of fresh and canned fruit and vegetables from Moldova in the middle of July. As a result, the EU decided to double the quotas on the import of particular Moldovan products into the EU from August 1, 2014.
According to Russian websites, on August 1 Russia will impose a temporary ban on the import of Polish fruit and vegetables.
