Balti lawyer accused of taking 1,000 euros from client
Officers of the General North Division of the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime (CCCEC) arrested a lawyer of the Associate Law Firm in Balti town on suspicion of influence peddling, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the Center.
According to the information provided by the CCCEC, the lawyer asked 1,000 euros from his client accused of robbery – offence punished with 6 to 12 years’ imprisonment or fine of up to 30,000 lei. The lawyer said he could influence the prosecutors investigating the case and judges of the Balti Court and convince them not to give him a jail term.
Legal action was taken against the lawyer over influence peddling. On March 10, the lawyer was arrested by employees of the General North Division near the office of the Associate Law Firm located on Moscow Street in Balti. He had 1,000 euros marked “CCCEC bribe” on him. He will be under arrest for 72 hours.
If found guilty, the lawyer would pay a fine of up to 60,000 lei or be imprisoned for 3 to 7 years.
