Balti authorities sued for violating right of access to information

The local authorities of Balti town last year were involved in 18 lawsuits for violating the law on the access to information. In a meeting of the executive, the head of the law division of the Balti mayor’s office Vitalie Balan said the court in two cases ruled in favor of the mayor’s office, one claim was rejected, while another 15 cases are being examined, IPN reports.

According to Vitalie Balan, the local authorities are sued because some of the functionaries provide incomplete information to applicants and owing to the conflict between the law on the access to information and the law on the personal data protection. The employees of the mayor’s office should devote greater attention to the answers to petitions, while Parliament should review the given laws so as to liquidate the existing contradictions. The number of lawsuits against the Balti mayor’s office increases annually owing to the worsening economic and social conditions in the town and to the negligence of some of the executive’s employees.

Igor Gordas, who heads an association of privatized dwellings owners, filed 16 suits against the local authorities for the reason that these do not obey the legislation when distributing land for building shops on it, adopt decisions that lead to the misuse of the budget money and neglect voters’ proposals for solving social problems. One of the suits was brought after the application by which he asked for the copy of the Balti Municipal Council’s decision to cut trees from an area in downtown, where there was to be constructed a shop, was neglected.
