The bakeries in Edinet have already increased the price of bread. The hikes came after a recent statement by President Vladimir Voronin who assured that the bread will not get dearer even if the grain harvest decreased to a half compared with last year. The price of a white loaf of 0.5 kg has increased from MDL 2.75 to MDL 3.25. The same price has to be paid for the knot-shaped bread. The white bread baked from high quality flour costs MDL 5.5, against MDL 5 last week. The brown bread has increased in price by MDL 0.75, from MDL 2.5 to MDL 3.25. According to the heads of “Vovc” and “Pavlovschi” bakeries, quoted by Nord-Press Agency, because of the drought, as well as due to the higher tariffs for electricity the price of bread will continue to grow. Head of Agriculture Department of Edinet town Victor Lesnic explains the increase in price by the fact that the price of wheat flour has went up to MDL 3.2/kg. Previously, he stated that the bread baked from the second category flour will not exceed MDL 3. “Franzeluta” JSC has not increased the prices so far. During a meeting at the Presidency, Company Director Eugen Baleca said that the main producer of bread was forced to increase the production volumes, after several companies working in the field stopped their activity. “The price of bread mostly solicited by the disadvantaged strata of population should be increased. We are able to offer stable prices for this product”, Vladimir Voronin said on July 23 during a meeting on the identification of solutions for overcoming the situation caused by drought.
