Russian blogger Eduard Baghirov, who was sentenced to five years in jail for contributing to organizing the April 2009 events by a Moldovan court of law on April 24, was freed from arrest during the investigation because he started to cooperate with the investigation bodies. Such conclusions were formulated in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

“Even if he behaved like a hero, this Baghirov at a certain moment yielded and started to cooperate with the investigation bodies. He was released from arrest and placed under house arrest not accidentally. Afterward, he was allowed to freely leave Moldova because he began to reveal names of politicians involved in the April 2009 events,” said the former acting director of the Security and Information Service Valentin Dediu.

Political analyst Roman Mihaes also considers Baghirov was allowed to leave Moldova because he started to provide information that discredited high-ranking officials. “This criminal case, which ended with the conviction of Baghirov, can have the effect of a bomb. It’s clear that Baghirov was released when he started to speak. The conviction of Baghirov refuted the thesis that Romania and the West had been involved in the organization of the protests of 2009. On the other hand, the involvement of the Russian secret services in this event became plausible,” he said.

Lawyer Vitalie Catana said there are practically no chances for Baghirov to be made to serve his sentence. “However, it is important that justice was made and we can console ourselves that this Baghirov will never come to our country again,” he stated.

The sentence against Eduard Baghirov was passed in his absence. He is now in Moscow and cannot be extradited because he is a Russian citizen. The blogger managed to leave Moldova through the Transnistrian region the same day he was placed under house arrest, without being guarded.
