Sixty students awarded at the ABC contest at the end of the summer school ALTAIR 2014 received books and diplomas. Most of the awardees took part in the math workshop, IPN reports.
Violeta Popovici-Bujor, project manager at the excellence school “ALTAIR 2014”, said that over 1,000 students from a number of education institutions took part in the summer school this year, an increase compared with the previous school.
“The activities started when the bell rang to announce the beginning of the summer vacation and the children enrolled on the courses and enriched their knowledge of math, reading, oratory, etc. This year the children left for Bulgaria and Greece. The transport expenses were covered by the parents, but, owing to our partners, the children received candies and books,” stated Violeta Popovici-Bujor.
Initially, the summer camp was designed as a school for math Olympiad awardees, but the number of those who wanted to take part increased over the last few years and all the children whose parents can cover the costs are now accepted. The students choose the workshops where they work while they are at the summer camp.
Math teacher of the Theoretical Lyceum “Stefan cel Mare si Sfant” Tatiana Pribega, ALTAIR project manager, said the students during summer can enrich the knowledge acquired at school and can solve competitive problems every day. The children who are not interested in math can take part in origami, chess, rhetoric and other kinds of workshops.
“The activities are mandatory, but the students are not given grades. At the end of the school, those who want take part in the final contest ABC. The students are assessed and awarded depending on the results achieved. The number of participants is on the rise. After the summer school, the students fond of math can attend the municipal excellence center on Saturdays,” said Tatiana Pribega.
Over the last few years, ALTAIR extended its activity to cover other regions of the country and the project managers say it is a motivation for the students to interact with mates from other schools.
