Authorities to evaluate causes leading to need to seek social assistance

Territorial social assistance agencies will evaluate the causes that make people seek social assistance. The assessment will be accompanied by a plan that may include the provision of social assistance measures, including social services, and in the case of families with able-bodied beneficiaries, employment measures as well. This is provided for in a legislative proposal registered in Parliament.

MP Dorian Istratii, the bill’s sponsor, said the initiative aims to reduce dependence on social benefits, and also to encourage able-bodied beneficiaries to participate in active employment measures. “Motivation to work is an important aspect for the social assistance system, even if it is not directly related to the targeting mechanism. Any social assistance mechanism must be built in a way that encourages social inclusion and employment”, argues the lawmaker.

In 2023, the government paid 686.5 million lei in social benefits, and the amount is planned to increase to 725.4 million lei this year.

If it becomes law, the legislative proposal will take effect on January 1, 2025.
