The Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections suspects that the authorities intend to delay the launch of the State Voter Register. The suspicions derive from the fact that the agenda of the August 21 meeting of the Government includes a bill providing that the electoral rolls will be compiled by secretaries of local councils.
“The coalition is concerned about the legislative initiative of a group of lawmakers, by which they want to transfer the responsibility for writing, administering and updating the electoral lists to the secretaries of local councils. The Coalition reiterates that the electoral lists must be managed only by the Central Election Commission by implementing the electronic register of voters,” the Coalition’s secretary Nicolae Panfil said in a news conference at IPN.
Nicolae Panfil considers that if the Government approves this bill, there will appear questions as to authorities’ promises to improve the electoral rolls. “Such an act will imply that the State Voter Register will not be ready for implementation by the start of 2015, as the Election Code requires,” he stated.
The Government is asked to reject this bill. Nicolae Panfil reminds that among the electoral promises of the current rulers is the launch of the State Voter Register at the beginning of 2015.
