Authorities set to step up resumption of talks on Transnistrian issue

The political objectives for 2009 purse to step up the talks on the settlement of the Transnistrian issue on the basis of the Law on the basic provisions of the special legal statute of the localities on the Nistru's left bank (Transnistria). The issue was tackled Monday at a sitting convened by Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin, Info-Prim Neo reports. A press release issued by the Presidency reads that the importance of paying more heed on the part of the international community was underlined and they decided to include the issue into the political dialogue of the main international actors. “The participants in the sitting shared the opinion that in 2008, they managed to hold under control the issues related to the Transnistrian area and, especially, to the situation in the security zone. They find favorable pre-conditions to speed up the process of settling the Transnistrian conflict,” reads the release. Vladimir Voronin asked the Moldovan part to make efforts to resume the talks on the Transnistrian issue as soon as possible, exclusively in the 5+2 format. The president reconfirmed the positive results obtained by the EU Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM), pleading for prolonging its activity. The president also pleaded for the need to implement more trust-building actions between Chisinau and Tiraspol. “The Moldovan authorities involved in the process of re-establishing Moldova's territorial integrity should pay more attention to solving the problems of ordinary citizens living in that part of the country, to raise the standard of their lives, the president stressed. Vladimir Voronin asked for plan of measures to socially support the citizens living on the Nistru's left bank,” the release reads.
