Authorities issue orange code advisory for measles

As many as 56 cases of measles were confirmed by lab tests, while another 86 suspected cases are being examined. In the August 20 meeting of the National Extraordinary Public Health Commission, an orange code adversity was announced nationwide so as to step up the measures to prevent the spread of the disease, IPN reports.

Minister of Health, Labor and Social Protection Svetlana Cebotari after the meeting said 60% of the cases of measles were recorded in Ceadir Lunga distrust. Between two and seven cases of measles were logged in the districts of Cahul, Ungheni, Straseni, Taraclia, Nisporeni and Vulcanesti.

The disease spreads rapidly. A hotbed appeared at the start of August when a child from Ceadir Lunga, who returned from a visit to Ukraine infected, was at a camp in Morenii Noi village of Ungheni district together with almost 100 persons who were mainly from the southern districts of the country.

The measures that will be taken in the immediate period to prevent the spread of infection include the vaccination of children and adults who weren’t immunized. Health professionals were entrusted with the task of determining by September 1 children who weren’t vaccinated and of having discussions with parents so as to persuade them to have the children immunized. The unvaccinated children could be not allowed to study.

Svetlana Cebotari said vaccination is the safest method of protection against measles. Moldova has the necessary amount of vaccines and these are of a high quality and have been used for almost 50 years.
