Aurelia Hanganu: Academy of Sciences in 1994 declared that language spoken here is called Romanian

The speculations about the language spoken in the Republic of Moldova bother a lot the academic community of Moldova. The Academy of Sciences of Moldova and its Institute of Philology call on the speculators not to become involved and not to raise matters that they don’t really know. The Academy’s scientific secretary general Aurelia Hanganu, in an interview for Radio Free Europe, said the Academy in 1994 officially declared that the language spoken in Moldova is called Romanian, IPN reports.

As to the fact that the new President Igor Dodon changed the name of the language on the President’s website from Romanian into Moldovan, Aurelia Hanganu said that this way the Head of State causes feelings of irritation among those who deal with philology. “This case is an example of incoherence and unwillingness to accept what the Academy of Sciences says,” she stated.

According to Aurelia Hanganu, this is insistence on developing a useless subject that causes yet disagreement in society and actually distracts attention from other problems. Furthermore, this makes the relations between the President and the academic community and between the President and society in general tenser. The generations after the declaration of independence no longer question the name of the language. All the children in schools and all the graduates know that the language is Romanian.
