Four persons, one of whom is a Customs Service employee, were arrested for attempting to smuggle about 1 kilogram of gold estimated at over 1 million lei from the United States, IPN reports.

The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said the four suspects tried to illegally introduce the gold into Moldova. More exactly, the gold ingots and granules were sent as postal packages. The gold weighing 1,024 grams had 99.99% purity. The merchandize was ordered from the U.S. over the Internet. 

The suspects aged between 25 and 50, among who is an inspector of a Chisinau custom post, are from Chisinau and Ialoveni. They were remanded in custody for 72 hours initially.

The smuggling case is examined by the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases in concert with the Antifraud Department of the Customs Service.
