At least 70 settlements in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia were flooded as a result of the September 29 heavy rain. The level of water rose to even 2 meters in parts, inundating homes. A number of families were evacuated and lodged at dorms of the University of Comrat, IPN reports.

While on a working visit to the southern districts, Prime Minister Ion Chicu assured that the Government will allocate financial resources for those affected. During ten days, the local authorities and commissions for emergencies will gauge the extent of damage. The money will be allocated from the Reserve Fund.

The mayor of Comrat town Sergey Anastasov estimated that over 1.8 million lei is needed to clean the local river on a section of approximately 1 km.

Premier Chicu also travelled to Cimișlia, where he discussed the situation following the torrential rain with the head of the district Mihai Olărescu. According to the Government’s press service, the head of Cimișlia district informed the Premier that the consequences were alleviated and a local commission will assess the suffered losses.
