At least 20 hurt when escalator at Rome metro station runs out of control

At least 20 persons were hurt, some being in a serious state, when the escalator at a metro station in Rome speeded out of control with people hurtling into each other, Mediafax reported on its website, quoting Italian media outlets.

According to preliminary examinations, among those hurt are supporters of the football club CSKA Moscow who were heading for the venue of the Russian team’s match against A.S. Roma. The escalator went out of control because there were too many persons on it, almost 80, and because some of the Russian fans, being under the influence of alcohol, jumped on stairs in a group.

The metro station was closed and the trains run without stopping at that station. Hundreds of members of emergency teams were sent to the scene. An investigation is underway to establish the exact cause of the incident.

Contacted by IPN, Alexandru Roitman, of the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, said the Moldovan authorities and Moldova’s Embassy in Italy contacted the authorities in Rome to find out if those hurt included Moldovans. According to the provided information, no Moldovan citizens were injured in the incident.
