Minimum 100 homes and dozes of basements were flooded in Chisinau following the rain of the last few days. More than 20 trees were downed by the wind. In the July 1 meeting of Chisinau City Hall officials, the heads of the municipal services said such a situation is witnessed for the first time in the last 10 years, IPN reports.
Iurie Gustiuc, head of the Chisinau Emergencies Division, said that in Durlesti town of Chisinau municipality the rescuers pumped the water out of two houses. Eight persons were evacuated, two of whom children. The rescuers also towed a number of vehicles out of the water on the streets Albisoara and Calea Iesilor.
In this connection, Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca asked that all the streets posing a threat to the traffic and pedestrians should be closed and that the units of transport be diverted to other streets.
The head of the Public Amenities Division Petru Gontea said that about 40 basements have been flooded, 22 of which are situated in apartment buildings managed by the municipality. The Division received 100 requests for aid following the flooding of homes.
According to the head of the Green Areas Association Eliferii Haruta, at least seven vehicles were damaged by branches broken by the wind.
The mayor instructed the division heads to assess the damage caused. If the rain does not stop, there will be declared a state of emergency.
