Association of Historians of Moldova seeks withdrawal of integrated history books

The Association of Historians of Moldova demands that the authorities withdraw the integrated history books from schools. A relevant resolution was adopted by the General Assembly of Historians on December 20. The historians also asked that the present administration and specialists in the field hold debates to overcome the “crisis situation” in the historical education in Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports. At the Assembly, Gheorghe Paladi, the outgoing chairman of the Association of Historians of Moldova, said the organization will take steps to reduce the serious consequences of teaching history on the basis of integrated history textbooks in schools. “The authors of these textbooks did not take into account the observations made by experts of the Council of Europe and allowed using these books that contain false theses. “These textbooks are of Soviet origin because they revive the Soviet thesis about the existence of two different nations - Moldovans and Romanians, two different languages, cultures and histories,” Gheorghe Paladi said. According to the vice chairman of the Association of Historians Ion Negrei, the content of the integrated history books traumatize the students morally and intellectually, while the viewpoint of the Communist Party of Moldova (PCRM) was raised to the level of state ideology, which runs counter to Moldova’s Constitution. “The main idea of this history course is the idea of Moldovenism, the history textbooks becoming an electoral agent of the PCRM. The portrait of the present leader of the PCRM is repeated 12-14 times in the integrated history books for the twelfth grade. This leader is the President of Moldova and not of the whole world and cannot represent the universal history,” Ion Negrei said. Gheorghe Paladi said that all the historians’ actions will be aimed at cultivating the concept of Romanian people’s unity among young persons, even if the Romanians live in different states. “We will organize a meeting of school history teachers to discuss history teaching. The high school graduates that come to universities know neither the universal history nor the history of Romanians and the situation in historical education is much worse than at the start of the 90s,” said Palade. The General Assembly of Historians is held once in two years, according to the regulations. The December 20 meeting elected Sergiu Musteata as the new chairman of the Association.
