Association Agreement must be an accord on which people can count, Catherine Ashton

The European Unions wants the Association Agreement with Moldova to be an accord on which the people can count so as to deal with the existing challenges, said the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, who is in Moldova on a visit.

“We are sometimes tough in our demands, but we ask these things because we consider that this is the best way for the country to advance on the path to economic and political reforms,” Catherine Ashton said in a news conference held jointly with Iurie Leanca. She also said that Moldova made veritable progress in negotiating the Free Trade Agreement and in other aspects of the close relationship with the EU.

“Vilnius will be a veritable opportunity for celebrating this close relation and certain aspects concerning the future in the November summit. I’m very glad that Moldova will be determined to come with the best offers. We are happy to play an active and powerful role in the 5+2 discussions on the Transnistrian conflict. I’m sure that the best solution will be found, which will ensure a bright future for everyone,” said the European official.

Iurie Leanca said that together with Catherine Ashton they agreed the schedule of actions that will be taken to prepare the initialing of the Association Agreement that is to be signed in 2014. Moldova’s objective is to implement the accord as soon as possible. The creation of the Free Trade Area is a relevant objective for Moldova, which will help open the county’s economy, reduce prices and increase investments.
