Assistance for migrant women

UN Women Moldova is promoting a project aimed at defending the rights of working migrant women and at protecting them against exclusion and exploitation at all the stages of migration, IPN reports.

In a thematic seminar, Veronica Guranda, who has worked in the UK for several years, said it is very hard to find employment in this country. The women are usually employed to do work that does not need special qualifications as they cannot equalize the education certificates obtained in Moldova. Most of the migrants are paid very low salaries. The entrepreneurs know that they do not have a choice and will work for paltry salaries. If there are more information sources for migrants and the authorities monitor the entrepreneurial activity stricter, the situation will change.

The leader of the Association “AssoMoldave” from Italy Tatiana Nogailic said there should be published brochures with information in the Romanian language about organizations and institutions from which the migrant women can seek help when they look for a job or when their rights are violated. The Moldovan authorities should financially support the associations of Moldovans that, for their part, should take measures to inform those from the diaspora.

National coordinator of the UN Women’s project Janna Sofroni stated that half of the Moldovan migrants are women. 34% of them have higher education. About 60% of the migrant women are employed as unqualified workers and receive low salaries. 48% of them do housework, 13% work in trade, 11% in the service sector, while 7% in confectionery and production.

By this project, the legislation on migration, labor and trafficking in persons will be reviewed so as to see if it is in line with the international conventions on human rights protection. There will be promoted the creation of the Joint Information and Services Bureau in 21 districts of the country as an efficient platform for providing services and information about the necessities of migrant women.

The project “Promotion and protection of rights of working migrant women” is implemented nationwide in three pilot countries: Moldova, Mexico and the Philippines.
