Ascension Day is observed today

The Christians celebrate the Ascension of Jesus today, May 13. The Ascension is one of the great feasts in the Christian liturgical calendar, and commemorates the bodily Ascension of Jesus into heaven. Ascension Day is traditionally celebrated on a Thursday, the fortieth day from Easter Day. On this day, the Christians say to each other and answer “Christ Is Risen!”, “He Has Risen Indeed!”. Among other customs connected with the liturgy of this feast is the Commemoration of the Dead in the Canon of the Mass, Bishop Pavel Borshevski, of the Chisinau church Saint Dumitru, told Info-Prim Neo. The Christian doctrine of the Ascension holds that Jesus ascended to heaven in the presence of his Eleven Apostles following his resurrection, and that in heaven he sits at the right hand of God the Father. In Eastern Orthodox theology, the Ascension is interpreted as the culmination of the Mystery of the Incarnation, in that it not only marked the completion of Jesus' physical presence among his apostles, but consummated the union of God and man when Jesus ascended in his glorified human body. Th bodily Ascension into heaven is also understood as the final token of Christ's two natures: divine and human. For many Christians, Ascension Day's meaning provides a sense of hope that the glorious and triumphant return of Christ is near. It is a reminder of the Kingdom of God within their hearts, and of the ever-present Spirit of God, watching over and protecting them as they spread the light of Jesus' truth throughout the world. Priest Pavel Borshevski said on the Accession the people take Paschal bread and painted eggs to the church, as on Easter. Mass is attended and the Paschal candle, which was lit on Easter Sunday, is extinguished. Lamb is usually eaten on the day of the feast.
