As Nistru's water reaches 18.5 m, water pump in Vadul lui Voda still works normally

“The water level in the Nistru is 18.5 m,” Chisinau Mayor told a news conference at 16.00 on Tuesday. Compared to the last evening, the water decreased at the Dubasari plant dam. Vadul lui Voda is not flooded and neither faces flooding, Dorin Chirtoaca said, assuring the situation was under control, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Although the level is so high -- almost 19 m – the water pumping facility goes on normally,” he said. It has a reserve of 1.5 m more before being flooded. But after additional measurings, the pump is said to be able to face a level of 21 m of water. The Chisinau Municipality allocated 8 million lei to Apa-Canal Chisinau supplier to buy filtering substances and additional pumps to be installed at the Vadul lui Voda plant. Its manager Constantin Becciev says the water reached the historic high, after it was 18.3 m in 1969. In case the pumping facility is flooded, Apa-Canal will work according to a special schedule, as the water will be supplied in the morning and in the evening. The City Hall has allocated 58,000 lei to better equip the municipal police in such situations. The lights are kept on during the night in Vadul lui Voda to help the police, as they supervise the assets of the companies in the area. The Civil Protection and Emergencies Service announces 50 households in Vadul lui Voda have been disconnected from the natural gas pipe because of threats the gas regulating station may be flooded. By 15.00, the water penetrated 41 houses in Soroca town, as 175 houses were flooded in the district. In Delacau village, Anenii Noi district, the water started to emerge from under the protection dam. In Serpeni village, 3 gardens were flooded, as only 1 m has remained till the water reaches houses. In Calfa village, the Bac river rose with 80 cm, flooding 27 gardens. The villages of Telita and Varnita are threatened. 86 ha of corn were flooded in Napadova village, Floresti, as 7 houses were flooded in Sireuti village, Briceni. The local authorities from Stefan Voda say they back up dams with sand sacks in all the localities along the Nistru. The elderly and children are being evacuated as shelters and medical points are readied in every village. The floods are forecast to reach their peak tonight at 22.00.
